ok ok ok... Dr. Richard Alpert, the ageless wonder from lost. well, as we have seen with Locke, Rousseau, Hume etc.. many characters are named after important people, mostly philosophers that works coincide with the themes on Lost. well Richard Alpert's character is no different. Dr. Richard Alpert was a Professor at Harvard University until he was banned for experimenting with Psychedelic Drugs on people. Long story short, he traveled to India and Around the world, he is a Hindu spiritual teacher and wrote the book : " Be here now". Dr. Richard Alpert then changed his name to " Ram Dass", for " Servant of God" in Hindu. source : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ram_Dassthis is where it gets really interesting, so now..we know exactly where the writers from lost got richard's character name. The real life Richard Alpert, or Ram Dass as he is now called wrote a book in the 1970's as i mentioned before , called" be here now "...this book is so much connected to the show. connections to Jacob, Dharma...everything is in this book and it was just so crazy when i saw it. this is the Wikipedia page on the book : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Be_Here_Now_(book)but please you must chek the pages in the book, especially pages 4-8-15-16-23-and 42, try getting some images on the internet because it's really crazy how it's connected to the show. oh and the second half of the book has exactly 108 pages, isn't that a coincidence... im going to try looking for some pictures on the internet and if i find any ill post a link. Really guys...its a must see, i was freaking out when i saw this book... i can't believe there's been little to none discussion about this on the internet.

Wow. That page with the empty chair, but the footprints to insinuate that someone is actually there. I think you've stumbled upon the actual bible of for the show.
There's a phrase on page 4, "I am here but 'I' am not here." Reminds me of Charlie's,"I am dead, but I'm also here."
The random page of space/time travel toward the bottom, "You can't think... in time and space." "You can't be .... in your thoughts." Sounds connected to finding "your constant."
This is a really cool find, Adam. Thanks for uploading the pictures too. Awesome.

Awesome find. That is some really good and truly freaky *&%$@#! I especially like the pictures with the drawings that start around page 16 or so. I think this is just another example of a certain well of pop culture/social philosophy that Lost has always been drawing from. There is definitely a period that spans from the early '60s to the late '70s, that this material is a perfect artifact of, that seems to fascinate and inspire the Lost creators. It's hard to sum up, but it's a certain time when science and art/creative expression were (or at least seemed to be) converging in the middle. Scientists were becoming more interested in culture and philosophy and artists were becoming more educated. People like Timothy Leary and 'Ram Dass' (Alpert) were 'experimenting' with hallucinogenics and collaborating with artists and musicians (who liked the drugs, imagine that). One of the common factors of this 'new' culture was a certain view of 'Eastern' or alternative spiritual philosophies, especially Buddhism and Hinduism as influenced by the Beatles and other, mostly British, musicians. Westerners who had never really been exposed to these cultures were mixing and matching the bits they liked and mashing together all the more peaceful/touchy-feely aspects of religions they didn't fully understand. The result in many ways is the 'New-Age' / Hippy culture that's still with us today. But there was also a slightly darker, more mysterious vibe around the edges of this whole weirdness that has long been great territory for fiction. It's the idea of otherwise educated people considering that maybe these ancient 'foreign' (to the West) cultures and philosophies may hold answers to questions that science and rational thinking doesn't. And you'll notice JJ Abrams has long been interested in this pseudo-scientific mystical gray-area in his work - Alias had Rambaldi, Lost has Dharma, and Fringe is all about scientists exploring the 'unexplained'. I mean Lost, obviously, is all about a group of slightly hippy-ish 'scientists' that stumble on an ancient and mystical island in the relevant 60s/70s period and set up shop there to explore lots of great 'In Search of...' type fringe science ideas like telekinesis and genetic tampering, complete with Eastern religious trappings (DHARMA). It is a great creepy source of ideas, especially for those of us (I was born in '78) who grew up with '70s/'80s television. This book is a great example of the inspiration for Lost. Another slight connection to Lost is that Charlie's favorite band, Oasis, Mancunian disciples of the whole Beatles/60's thing, made an album called - Be Here Now. It's all connected
